The edible frog (Pelophylax kl. esculentus) was formerly considered a species (Rana esculenta), but today it is known to be a hybridogenetic hybrid form of the lake frog and the pool frog. Hybridogenesis refers to a reproductive system in which interbreeding of two species are able to reproduce with either parent species, but not with each other. There is no recombination at all in meiosis, but one of the parental chromosome sets remains completely excluded as gametes are formed. The gametes of the interbreeding of two species then contain only an entire chromosome set of either parent species, which is clonally transmitted from generation to generation. Hybrids breed only with individuals of the parent species, resulting in exclusively additional hybrids. Descendants produced by diploid hybrids among themselves are not viable. Therefore, the edible frog is not actually a species, that is way there is the abbreviation “kl.” in its scientific name. The acronym comes from the Greek word “klepton”, suggesting that hybridgenetic frogs in each generation “steal” one chromosome from either parent species to produce the next generation. It is, they need one of the parent species to be able to reproduce.

In most of Europe, including the Baltic countries, the edible frog lives in the same areas as the pool frog and reproduces with it. Populations in which the edible frog reproduces with the lake frog are less common, but they are known in the Baltic Sea region at least in the northern coast of Poland and in Bornholm.

In some populations of edible frogs, also triploid individuals with the additional chromosome of either the pool frog (LLR type) or the lake frog (LRR type) are present. When mating with a diploid, a triploid individual acts as a parent species, and in these populations the edible frog is able to reproduce without either parent species. Specifically this happens in Denmark and southern Sweden, where the edible frog is common but both parent species are absent.

Valtioneuvoston asetus vieraslajeista aiheutuvien riskien hallinnasta.

Sammakkolampi. The sound of water frogs may cover the silent croaking of the native frogs' spawning, and their pairing may no longer succeed. In addition, the water frogs spawn about a month later than native frogs and when the native tadpoles hatch, water frogs are eating them.

Water frogs might also be beneficial, as they eat potentially more insect pests that are harmful to human than the native frogs.
Pelophylax esculentus
AmphibiaWeb. 1999.

Colonies of aquatic edible frogs can be found in all the habitats in which the lake and pool frogs occur. Adult edible frogs thrive in water even after spawning time, but young individuals roam on land. Tadpoles often bask in the shallows during the day, but stay in deeper water at night. Water frogs usually overwinter on land, less often in water.

Lyhenne tulee kreikan kielen sanasta ”klepton”, mikä viittaa siihen, että hybridogeneettiset sammakot kussakin sukupolvessa ”varastavat” jommaltakummalta kantalajilta yhden kromosomiston tuottaakseen seuraavan sukupolven.

The edible frog belongs to the genus of waterfrogs (Pelophylax). The precise determination of the species of waterfrogs is difficult and usually it requires an expert. In Finland, edible frogs are only found in the Turku region, where they have spread strongly since their first sighting in 2008. Most likely the species arrived in the region unintentionally with the help of a human.

The control of water frogs is already difficult at the moment. The entire ecosystem of the fifty ponds would suffer if they were emptied to get rid of the water frogs. Instead, the introduction of new individuals from abroad into Finnish nature may be prevented by sharing information to amphibian enthusiasts about the harmfulness of alien species.
true 6
Translation: Luke 2023.
false ätlig groda Probably anthropogenic origin in Finland, but details are not known.

MMM 2017, 2019.
http://loydos.luomus.fi/forms/sammakot-ja-matelijat

Suomessa ruokasammakko havaittiin ensimmäisen kerran Turun Ruissalossa vuonna 2008.

Suomessa ruokasammakko on luokiteltu vieraslajiksi.
Edible frog
The external characters and vocalization of the edible frog are an intermediate form of the lake frog and the pool frog. In Finland, usually the colour is more or less bright green with dark spots, but some individuals have a lot of brown color. The vocal sacs of male frogs are usually dirty white or gray. The heels of the hind limbs, when outstretched straight forward, usually extend well past the eyes but rarely past the tip of the snout. The vocalizations of an edible frog is characterised by a creaky “kre-r-r-r-r-r-rek”, resembling the sound that arises when pulling the spikes of a comb with a stick.

Edible frogs can be diploid or triploid. Individuals that are triploid resemble more the parent which chromosomes they have twice, either pool or lake frog.

Mainly, the distribution of the edible frog follows that of the pool frog. There are only some distinct populations of pool frogs in which the edible frog is absent. On the other hand, the uniform distribution area of the edible frog covers Denmark, and Skåne in Sweden, of which both the pool and lake frogs are absent.

In Finland, the edible frog was first observed in 2008 in Ruissalo in Turku. By 2013, it had been found in around 50 ponds in the Turku region, stretching from Naantali to Paimio and from Vahto to Kaarina. The spread seems to have occured rapidly.

In Finland, the morphology of the captured and studied individuals suggests that there might be triploid individuals of both the type LRR and the type LLR, but this needs to be confirmed by further research. Also, no individuals of either parent species have been found in edible frog populations, which suggests that triploid individuals are involved. Reportedly, the populations closest to Finland containing triploid individuals of edible frogs are in Skåne in Sweden, in the Danish islands, and in Poland and northern Germany. At least in Denmark, both triploid types LLR and LRR are commonly found as well as the diploid type LR.

In Finland, it is likely that the edible frogs originate from the southernmost parts of the Baltic Sea from where they have migrated to Finland, possibly by marine traffic. The deliberate planting of the pool frog is also a possiblity which cannot be ruled out either in this case.
