The typical habitats are a sand moor growing heather, an edge of a sand pit, or another sunny, dry, sandy place with dense vegetation. Sand lizards are day-active, and often they move among low vegetation, heathers in Finland, in search of food.
"},{"variable":"MX.identificationText","title":"Bestämning","content":"The sand lizard is slightly larger than the common lizard (Zootoca vivipara, formerly Lacerta vivipara), and often greenish in color. The length of the sand lizard from the snout to the cloacal opening is usually less than 9 cm. The tail is longer than the body, sometimes almost twice as long as the the body, so that the total length can reach up more than 20 cm. The body structure of the sand lizard is stockier than the common lizard's.
\r\nColoring is very variable: especially during the breeding season, the sides of males can be green or greenish. The upper part of the back is brown and between the green sides and the brown back, there are often light brown areas that form a light streak from the neck to the end of the tail. Females and young individuals are brownish or greyish throughout. Both males and females have have dark dots, spots or eyespots on the back and sides. The ventral side is lighter than the back and less patterned. In particular, a brown female sand lizard can be difficult to quickly distinguish from a common lizard.

In Central Europe, the species is found widely, from Britain to Russia and from France to the Balkan Peninsula. In the east, the sand lizard is found very close to the Finnish border on the Russian side.
\r\nSince the sightings of sand lizards in Finland were made in Southwestern Finland, it seems impossible that they could have spread through Finland without anyone noticing. It could be possible that sand lizards have spread from Sweden through the archipelago, but there haven't been any sightings between the Swedish mainland and Turku, so a natural spread through this route seems unlikely. Thus, most likely it has spread to Finland with humans.

If you got a sand lizard prior to the entry into force of the Alien Species Regulation on January 1st 2016, it is allowed to keep it until natural death.
