Description
Other common names: marbled crayfish
The marmorkrebs may grow to a length of 13 cm, but generally remains below 10 cm in length. The species is able to succeed in a variety of habitats. In the warm climate of Madagascar, rapidly growing marbled crayfish populations have developed, but the species has also been reported to have survived in ponds that freeze in winter. The species is popular and widespread in the aquarium trade, even in Finland. Parthenogenetic reproduction makes the species easy to reproduce. Growth and reproduction is fastest in aquariums at a temperature of 18–25 °C, but in cold water reproduction ceases. The species reaches sexual maturity at four months of age and at a length of approximately 4 cm. Its eggs develop into juveniles within two weeks in the fastest cases.
