Sambucus racemosa

Description

Red elderberry is a fast-growing, 2–4 metres tall shrub of the honeysuckle family (Caprifoliaceae). The leaves resemble the rowan (Sorbus aucuparia) to a certain degree, but the strong, fetid smell is an easy way to distinguish red elderberry from rowan. Birds eat the red, slightly toxic berries of red elderberry, and spread the seeds.
