Symphytum ×uplandicum

Description

Comfreys are tall, roughly and densely haired members of the Borage family. Their purple, blue or yellowish white flowers are funnel-shaped. Decurrent leaves are a typical feature of the common comfrey (S. officinale). It is divided into two varieties, based on the colour of the flowers: dark purple (var. officinale) and yellowish white (var. bohemicum).

The flowers of Russian comfrey (S. asperum) change colour from pink to sky blue as flowering progresses.

Russian comfrey, a hybrid between common and prickly comfrey, comes in many varieties, the colour of the flowers varying from red via purple to blue, and sometimes almost white. The hybrid is highly diverse and produces new hybrids with the parent species.
