Description

Carnivores (Carnivora) is an order of mammals that includes about 270 species from 15 families:

      • canins (Canidae)
      • bears (Ursidae)
      • red panda (Ailuridae)
      • procyonids (Procyonidae)
      • mephitids (Mephitidae)
      • mustelids (Mustelidae)
      • walrus (Odobenidae)
      • eared seals (Otariidae)
      • earless seals (Phocidae)
      • Malagasy mongooses (Eupleridae)
      • cats (Felidae)
      • mongooses (Herpestidae)
      • hyenas (Hyaenidae)
      • African palm civet (Nandiniidae)
      • viverrids (Viverridae).

The species in the group of alien carnivores that have been nationally legislated as invasive alien species include, for example: 

The group of invasive alien carnivores does not include the species that are included in the list of invasive alien species of Union concern, such as the raccoon (Procyon lotor) and South American coati (Nasua nasua), which are classified as semi-bears, and the raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides) and small Indian mongoose (Herpestes javanicus).

Also, the group of alien carnivores does not include domestic dogs, domestic cats nor ferrets, which are common companion and hobby animals.
