Chipmunks belong to the family of squirrels, marmots and chipmunks (Sciuridae). The genus Tamias includes 25 species, 23 of which belong to the subgenus Neotamias. In addition, the genus includes the eastern chipmunk (Tamias striatus) and the Siberian chipmunk (Tamias sibiricus), but they are not included in the national list of invasive alien species. Marmots (genus Marmota) and sousliks (genus Spermofilus), which also belong to the squirrel family and live in the ground, do not belong to the subgenus of chipmunks.
The Siperian chipmunk (Tamias sibiricus) is not included in the national list of invasive alien species but in the list of invasive alien species of Union concern.
